With the advent of the Internet, the evolutionary trajectory of human collective
consciousness is now calculable, and it's a bit of an anticlimax. Just as we
look at a sentient creature as infinitely complex as an ameoba and disregard
all of its mechanisms with a "Pfft, okay, so it motates toward food somehow"
so have we demonstrated that we are willing and content to reduce entire human
brains into single neurons in a larger structure.
